Wild About Turtles!
Project Nature's central goal is to help children develop a sense of relationship with the earth and non-human animals. "Wild About Turtles" was designed with this very important goal in mind. As usual, there is music, music, music! Songs like "Big Beautiful Planet in the Sky" help children think about their connection with the Earth and other creatures. Through "Reptile Song," children discover some of the unique qualities of turtles and other reptiles. "You Can't Make a Turtle Come Out" and "Why Did the Turtle Cross the Road?" help children realize just how extraordinary turtles really are!
Boxie, PN's unpredictable and somewhat vocally challenged turtle puppet implores the children to "Imagine What It's Like to Be a Turtle!" Visual arts activities vary according to age, and clay turtle sculpting and puppet making are certainly favorites!
A major highlight of "Wild About Turtles" is a visit from four "real" turtles. Project Nature has acquired several turtles (captive bred or rescued/adopted turtles) to introduce to the children during the program. The children get a close look at a tortoise, a box turtle and a few aquatic turtles. The program also provides ample opportunity for children to ask questions and share their own stories about turtles.
